LIP RETRACTION
The lips pull inward, disappearing into the mouth — or a finger, a pen, or another object passes the barrier of the teeth.
A need for reassurance. The person is regressing slightly toward a self-comforting behaviour.
Anything crossing the barrier of the teeth signals a return toward an infant-state of comfort. Watch for it in people called on stage, asked a hard question, or sitting through difficult news. The reassurance does not need to come from you, but knowing the need exists changes how you proceed.
Drinking, eating, or smoking, which are functional.
