GAZE AVERSION DOWN
The eyes drop to the floor or the lap during conversation.
Shame, submission, or grief, depending on context. Sometimes deep reflection.
Sustained downward gaze with a lowered head is shame or submission. A momentary drop while answering a question can be reflection. Read the duration. Downward aversion is more common in women and in cultures where direct gaze is considered disrespectful.
