NECK SCRATCH

The fingers of one hand scratch the side of the neck just below the ear, often three to five times.

MEANS

Doubt or uncertainty about what is being said — by the speaker, or about what the speaker has just heard.

CONTEXT

Often appears alongside a statement the person is unsure they agree with. The scratch is almost always on the side of the dominant hand. Note whether it happens during the person’s own speech (they doubt what they are saying) or the other person’s (they doubt what they have just heard).

NOT

An actual itch, which produces one or two firm scratches and then stops.
