SELF HUG
●●●
Both arms wrap around the torso, hands often gripping the opposite upper arms.
MEANS
Self-soothing in response to distress.
CONTEXT
A regression behaviour — the body recreates the feeling of being held. Common in people receiving very bad news, in grief, or in deep social discomfort. Different from arm crossing: the hug curves inward; the cross is flatter.
NOT
A warming gesture in cold.
